Benefit 'They're Real' Mascara - £18.50
Rightly or wrongly I feel like a bit of a bad blogger for not posting yesterday; I definitely deserve a slap on the wrist! I love writing blog posts and I tend to make a point of doing one a day and having a few in my 'drafts' for extra busy days, but I just didn't get time yesterday. Instead I headed of to Norwich for a visit day at UEA (University of East Anglia) which was lovely. I dragged my boyfriend along with me for moral support and then we headed off to Frankie and Benny's and the cinema afterwards; leaving me a very sleepy, VERY full blogger by the time I got home and I couldn't muster the energy to do anything!
Anyway, today's review is going to be on Benefit's 'They're Real' Mascara. Labelled the No.1 bestseller in the UK, this was first on my list when I realised I wanted to add something new to my collection a little while ago. Usually I'm faithful to my Elizabeth Arden mascaras as I've mentioned before that lash volume is key for me as opposed to length or curl. However, this mascara promises all three benefits and super long lasting results so I figured I'd give it a go!
As with all Benefit products I own the packaging for this is really impressive. I love the fact that the box itself has 'before and after' shots using this product; it's something I usually look for on google images before buying a product so this saved me all the hassle! The fact that the impressive facts and stats of this are displayed on the packaging is also a huge turn on for me personally as I love reading what other people think of a product before I dive in and buy it myself.
The package suggests that you hold the wand at the base of the lashes and 'wiggle' your way along the length; something which I'm used to doing anyway in order to get an even finish with all of the lashes covered. The brush itself really isn't to my taste; I know I'm not alone in prefering soft bristled brushes to plastic ones and the sheer size of this slightly daunted me at first - length-wise it's bigger than my eye itself! I was surprised at how easy this is to use though and on my first application I think I only poked myself in the eye with the wand once; something that I tend to do most days anyway no matter what mascara I use!
Being a blondie by nature means that I also have to suffer with fair eyelashes. Whilst they are quite long and I do have rather a lot of them, the fact that they start off mousy brown and fade to an almost invisible blonde towards the tips means that I can't face going out without doing something with them. Most black mascaras work fine at coating my lashes initially, but I do find that some alternatives I've tried don't last all day and my lashes are starting to look a little 'blah' again by the time I get home. With this however I would agree 100% that the results are long lasting - even when teamed with a pretty below standard set of lash curlers I find that this mascara keeps my lashes defined and helps them to hold their curl until well after I get home.
With/without Benefit 'They're Real' (obviously) - 1 coat used
I really am impressed with this, with just one coat of this my lashes are noticeably fuller, blacker, longer and thicker. If I were to split hairs on it however I do find it hard to apply more than just the one layer without the formula clumping slightly, but I'm not one for wearing lashings of mascara (pun intended) so it doesn't bother me so much, after all I'm happy with the look I get from just one coat anyway. I can't say quite yet whether I've been converted from my trusty Elizabeth Arden wands, but I do find that I'm reaching for this on a pretty regular basis, especially when I'm going for more of a 'done' look and I want my eyes to really pop.
